Sexual Reoffending Prevention Program in Fukuoka

CBT-based counseling and an individualized prevention plan

Free Style Counseling provides psychological support based on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to help prevent repeated sexual offending and sexually harmful behavior.

We carefully explore the background to your behavior, including thinking patterns, responses to emotions and urges, relationships and living circumstances. You will learn practical ways to respect others' rights and safety while developing a prevention plan tailored to your life.

We respect your dignity while supporting you to address harmful behavior and its impact, and to make changes that help prevent further harm.

Who the program is for

  • People seeking specialist support to avoid repeating sexual offending or sexually harmful behavior.
  • People who want to address behavior such as groping, voyeuristic photography, or sexual activity without consent.
  • People concerned about sexual urges or behavior that could lead to harm, who want to seek help early.
  • People needing ongoing prevention support during criminal proceedings, a suspended sentence, or after release from custody.
  • Family members, lawyers and professionals seeking advice about supporting someone.

Support based on cognitive behavioral therapy

Cognitive behavioral therapy is a psychological approach that explores the relationship between how we interpret events, our emotions, and our behavior, and helps us change patterns associated with difficulties.

The program examines thoughts, feelings, bodily responses and life events preceding harmful behavior. Sessions combine discussion, worksheets, practice in everyday life and review to help you recognize early warning signs and choose safe actions.

What the program covers

1. Initial consultation, assessment & goal setting

We discuss your history, current circumstances, difficulties and feelings about seeking support. Together, we explore the nature of the behavior, whether it has recurred, pressures in daily life, people you can turn to, and your strengths.

We consider your learning style and developmental characteristics, then agree on priorities and goals. At the outset, we also explain how support will be provided and how information will be handled.

2. Understanding the behavior cycle

We explore the sequence leading to harmful behavior in terms of situations, thoughts, emotions, bodily responses, actions and consequences.

We look beyond the moments immediately before an incident to changes in your life and emotional state. This helps identify recurring patterns and points at which a different action can be chosen.

3. Identifying & reconsidering cognitive distortions

We examine thoughts that justify harmful behavior or minimize its impact, such as "It was not that serious," "They must not have minded," or "I could not help it because I was stressed."

We distinguish facts from assumptions and consider the other person's perspective, rights and the impact of your actions. We then practice more realistic ways of thinking that support responsible choices.

4. Emotional regulation & coping with stress

We practice recognizing emotions related to your behavior, such as anger, anxiety, loneliness, low mood and shame.

We identify bodily signals and thoughts that accompany strong emotions and develop coping skills, such as steadying your breathing, leaving a situation, putting feelings into words and seeking support. The aim is to make safe choices even when emotions are intense.

5. Responding to sexual urges & risk factors

We explore sexual urges associated with your harmful behavior and situations requiring particular care. Internal factors, such as thoughts and feelings, and external factors, such as places, times, device use and alcohol, are considered in the context of your individual history.

Alongside avoiding high-risk situations, we practice specific responses to warning signs, such as stopping an activity, moving to a safe place and contacting a support person.

6. Sexual consent, equality in relationships & understanding harm

We explore respect for another person's wishes and boundaries, avoiding self-serving interpretations of consent, and accepting refusal or distance.

We also consider how sexual harm can affect a person's physical and mental health, daily life, sense of safety and relationships. We address minimization and victim-blaming and develop a willingness to take responsibility for one's own choices.

7. Problem-solving & communication skills

For difficulties at work, at home or in relationships, we practice defining the problem, considering several possible solutions and anticipating their consequences.

Using familiar situations, we practice expressing feelings and wishes appropriately, responding to refusal and asking for help when needed.

8. Building a life that supports prevention

We review sleep, work, leisure, coping strategies and social connections to identify ways of maintaining a stable daily life.

We identify your strengths and values and build activities that offer fulfillment and connection without harmful behavior. Where appropriate, and with your consent, we discuss support roles with family members and relevant services.

9. Developing your prevention plan

We bring together insights from learning and practice in a prevention plan you can use in everyday life.

The plan typically includes:

  • The background to harmful behavior and your individual behavior patterns.
  • Thoughts, emotions, bodily changes and behaviors that need attention.
  • Situations in which risk may increase, and steps to prevent this.
  • Specific actions to take when you notice warning signs.
  • People or services to contact, and how to reach them when you cannot manage alone.
  • Habits, activities and relationships that support a stable life.
  • Future goals and a schedule for reviewing the plan.

We move beyond general intentions such as "be careful" or "resist the urge" to specify what you will do, in which situation, and in what order. We check whether the plan is workable in likely situations and revise any gaps or unrealistic steps.

10. Putting the plan into practice & follow-up

You put the plan into practice in daily life and review what worked and what was difficult.

We update the plan as circumstances change or new challenges arise, supporting continued use of the coping skills you have learned.

Format & number of sessions

The program is primarily delivered through individual sessions, tailored to your needs, pace of learning and circumstances. Topics may be revisited over several sessions, and their order adjusted as needed.

We propose the number and duration of sessions after the initial consultation and assessment, and review progress throughout.

For families, lawyers & partner services

Family members can also seek advice on how to relate to the person and access support. We work together to build a support network so that families do not carry sole responsibility for prevention.

With the client's consent, we can coordinate with their lawyer and relevant services. Support plans, progress reports and psychological support opinions for court or other purposes are separate from the personal prevention plan developed in the program. Availability, content and fees are discussed on the basis of actual sessions and progress.

About this program

This CBT-based program is provided by our counseling practice and draws on publicly available materials concerning the Japanese Ministry of Justice's sexual reoffending prevention intervention (R3). It is not the Ministry's official program, nor is it delivered as a Ministry-certified or commissioned service.

The program supports ongoing work toward preventing reoffending. Participation does not guarantee that reoffending will not occur or that a particular outcome will be reached in court.

A place where you can feel safe to share your feelings.

As a psychologist, I have met people living with many different concerns and difficulties. Throughout that work, my first priority has been helping each person feel safe and at ease.

It is okay if you cannot find the words or your feelings are not yet clear. You do not have to force yourself to discuss something difficult. Start with what you feel able to share, at your own pace.

I want to listen carefully to each person's feelings and background, without making assumptions or rushing change.

Respecting your privacy and choices, andcreating a safe, reassuring place to talk. This is what I value in my counseling practice.

I hope this can be a place to breathe a little easier and explore what you have been carrying alone. We can think about what comes next at your own pace.
